On Monday, Mar. 10, Officers of the Cedar Lake Police Department were working in the morning hours with the family of a 43-year-old male who was in need of services under a court order. Sgt. Ryan Miller had been previously working with the family and today went to the residence of the 43-year-old in the 13500 block of Dewey St.
Contact was made with the male subject briefly, with negative results. As such, negotiators with the Northwest Regional SWAT Team were brought in. After the subject became agitated and uncooperative and retreated into his house, the SWAT Team was activated for the safety of everyone involved.
Negotiators were successful in talking the male subject out, who was then transported to a nearby medical facility. At no time was there a threat to anyone outside of the residence, and the subject was not armed with any weapons.
The use of NWR SWAT is to keep everyone safe in an unknown situation with barricaded subjects, including other officers. It is always the mission to have a peaceful surrender using negotiators.
The Cedar Lake Police Department commends the actions of our Officers working today, Commander Tom Kidd, Sgt. Ryan Miller, Cpl. Richard Pennington, Officer Dustin Corbin, and Officer Ben King. We also want to thank the Cedar Lake Fire Department and the Northwest Regional SWAT for their response and assistance.
When NWR SWAT responds, you will see a variety of Lake County Police agencies responding in their SWAT capacity. The Cedar Lake Police Department has three Officers assigned to NWR SWAT, two of whom are negotiators.
