As you probably know, the Lowell Town Council recently awarded street reconstruction projects for Liberty Street from Oakley to Main Street and Washington Street from Liberty Street to the CSX Railroad tracks.
Milestone Contractors North of Griffith was the successful bidder for Liberty Street and Town and Country Construction of Demotte was the successful bidder for Washington Street. The award amounts for Liberty and Washington Streets were $1,349,855 and $639,303 respectively. Fifty percent of the costs of these projects were offset by a Community Crossings Matching Grant awarded to the town by INDOT.
Both projects will include the complete reconstruction and replacement of the roadway pavement, subgrade, sidewalks, curbs, drive aprons and ADA Ramps. The Liberty Street project will include the construction of a new public parking lot at the location of the former water tower. Washington Street will include a new 10-foot wide pedestrian pathway with pedestrian lighting to accommodate the extension of the Freedom Trail from Nassau Park to the downtown.
Work on these projects is anticipated to begin the week of April 14. The roadways will be closed to through traffic. Local traffic will be accommodated but should expect periods of temporary closures to allow for construction of driveways and the removal and replacement of roadway pavement. Work is anticipated to be completed in early fall of this year. Residents should refrain from parking in the street during construction. Access to driveways will be restored at the end of each day unless excavation or the placement of infrastructure prohibits it.
Residents are encouraged to share parking with neighbors or on other streets if work temporarily prohibits parking in their driveways.
