Lowell Town Council awards contract for Washington Street project
The Lowell Town Council awarded the contract for a paving project on Washington Street at tonight’s meeting. The project will be partially funded by an INDOT Community Crossings Matching Grant.
Town manager Craig Hendrix said the town received three bids for the project. Town and Country Paving of Demotte was awarded the project with a bid of $639,303.02, according to Hendrix. He explained approximately half of that amount would be reimbursed to the town by INDOT.
Hendrix noted some items associated with the project, such as lighting, will not be covered by the grant for which the town will have to foot the bill.
Milestone Contractors, an Indianapolis based firm with a plant located in Lowell, bid $698,000 on the Washington Street project, followed by Gariup Construction of Gary with a bid of $1,007,000.
The motion to award Town and Country the contract passed unanimously.
Council also waived the late penalties on the January sewer bills due to a billing issue. Clerk-treasurer Jill Murr explained some of the bills went out late or didn’t go out at all. Murr recommended to council to waive the fees due to the clerical error. Council passed the motion unanimously.
Council approved the waiver of fees to the Lowell Woman’s Club for their annual Barktoberfest event in Freedom Park in October. On hand was Dorothy Eich, who presented a check on behalf of the club in the amount of $2,500 to council for Freedom Park.
“You guys waive $25 worth the fees,” Hendrix quipped to council, “and she brings in a check worth 10 times that.”
Council also approved:
Approved a voucher in the amount of $558,927.06 to Hasse Construction Company of Calumet City, Illinois for work pertaining to the Nassau Park project.
Approved the annual professional agreement with McMahon & Associates of Munster for accounting services.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 24.
