At 10:21 a.m. March 14, the Lowell Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire located in the 900 block of Kankakee Ave. in Lowell. A neighbor behind the resident noticed smoke coming from the eves of the home and call 911.
Fire command unit was first to arrive and were advised by the neighbors that the resident was most likely still in the home. Fire command requested to dispatch to upgrade the response to the fire, bringing more mutual aid departments to assist with fire suppression and the rescue. The first Lowell FD engine company arrived with smoke showing from the roof and eves of the home, made entry and located the resident unconscious in a bedroom on the first floor. The victim was removed from the home and patient care and transport was completed by Tri-Creek EMS personnel. The fire was contained in the kitchen and first floor of the home.
Further search of the home located two canines. One was found deceased, and the other canine was found alive, and pet first aid was given to the animal in distress.
There were no injuries reported during the fire from firefighters.
The cause and details of the fire are currently under investigation by Fire Investigators from the Lowell Fire Department and the State of Indiana Fire Marshal’s Office. Investigation is also being done in cooperation with the Detective Bureau with the Lowell Police Department.
